In this weeks mass timber construction updater, I talk about welded wood, where researchers from TMI Ltd and the University of Cambridge's Construction Innovation Lab developed "a sustainable process to rapidly join timber elements using linear friction welding." Margulies Perruzzi, one of New England's most innovative architectural and interior design firms, announced today that it has completed renovations and a two-story addition at 69 A Street in South Boston. The new Atlassian HQ in Sydney design aims to support and reflect the company’s core values. among these are an intense focus on workplace wellness and sustainability. Leading U.S. developer and builder Mortenson, in partnership with PGIM Real Estate and Urban Development Partners, has broken ground on its anticipated The Beam. Norwegian architecture studio Helen & Hard has built a cross-section of a co-housing project made from spruce wood in the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The former Martinsons’ sawmills in Bygdsiljum and Kroksjön, Sweden will take on the Holmen name from June 1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is providing funding support for a variety of wood projects through USDA Forest Service programs. The increasing frequency and severity of wildfires in California are leading some to question the ubiquity of wood-frame and mass timber construction. The Time for Timber campaign has released a white paper that aims to help insurance companies understand the vital role they play in supporting the construction industry to achieve Net Zero status by 2050.
