Speaker 1:Let's have a look at what's making news around the world this week in Mass Timber Construction land and work begins on the new Georgia Tech Athletic Performance Center. Construction has started on the Thomas A Fanning Student Athletic Performance Center with a 100,000 square foot facility at Georgia Tech and it will house the facilities. Dedicated Fanning Center will also house Georgia Tech's first science lab, where they will be looking at sports sports technicians and use in-house data analytics programs to track individual performance. Designed by SLAM Collaborative SLAM, the Fanning Center will feature several sustainability efforts, including repurposing steel from the campus's Bobby Dodd Stadium. It will also include partially offset energy saving design elements, including mass timber construction throughout the new athletic facility, the center being constructed atop of the footprint of the former edge rice center. If you'd like to see some images on this amazing project, head to our linkedin feed and check them out.
Speaker 1:And after years of planning and months of site preparation, construction for the first new homes in port moody's portland development will officially begin in may. It's when representatives from the project's developer, vancouver based edgar development, will officially begin in May. It's when representatives from the project's developer, vancouver-based Edgar Development, will be joined by the mayor to break ground at the Umbra, a six-story U-shaped building comprised of 219 one and two-bedroom condos, along with three-bedroom ground-level townhouses. Pre-sales for the units begin and it's about 70% sold out. Media reports around the project do not yet indicate whether Mass Timber will be used for the project. However, in 2021, port Moody Council decided that they were going to give the project a green light after a protracted discussion around the third SkyTrain station nearby and the use of mass timber construction for high-rise buildings. So let's see if this project does become a realisation using mass timber construction.

Timberland Holdings and the owner of the company Swinnerton, which is an employee owned company, have led the market for many years in trying to integrate the way that Mass Timber is working with a supply chain and delivery for construction projects, and they have now just agreed to purchase American laminators to continue their operations in Oregon-based places, and they will be commencing this particular joint venture on the 10th of June in 2024. American Laminators has a long history of high quality glulam products. News is that Chris Evans will be on the show to have a chat to us about what's actually happening and the plans for Timberlab moving forward in their joint venture with American Laminators, and construction recently kicked off in Oxbow, a mass timber multifamily community in Charlotte's the Mill District.
Speaker 1:The $97.8 million project consisting of 389 rental units and 14,300 square feet of commercial space, which sits on a 4.3 acre site formerly housing four commercial buildings, the street level will feature retail tenancy and is designed for boutique coffee shops and neighborhood services. The structure will be proposed a two-story concrete podium housing, below grade parking, topped with five-story hybrid structure, a stick frame and cross laminated timber. About 50% of the structure will feature exposed mass timber ceilings using Austrian spruce timber. Sustainability elements include high SEER rated HVAC systems, energy efficient appliances, rooftop solar panels, and tenants will have access to e-bike, e-scooter and electric car services. The project is seeking a silver rating by the National Green Building Standard, the only green building rating system for homes and apartments approved by the American National Standards Institute.
