Speaker 1:Let's have a look at what's making news around the world this week in Mashtimba Construction Land and first up we're in New South Wales, in Australia, and a Glebe social housing redevelopment by Homes. New South Wales is set to become the first CLT social, affordable apartment class 2 building in New South Wales, to be completed in early 2025. The 65 million dollar development will provide 75 fit-for-purpose social homes across eight-story towers and separate three-story terraces. This is designed to achieve a six Green Star rating and a renewal project will set a precedent for the construction industry using a methodology and mass timber. Construction. Group GSA was engaged by the executive architect to deliver the pioneering project, to tender on the construction, in partnership with the builder, Kane Constructions to deliver the project. If you'd like to see more, you can head to our LinkedIn feed and see the amazing photos that are coming out of that particular project, and the Softwood Lumber Board announced in an earlier this month that it's accepting applications for its cities for investments up to $250,000 each to help launch mass timber accelerator programs. The lumber industry, supported by trade groups, has already had similar investments in programs such as in Boston, new York and Atlanta. The mass timber now has become such a popular commercial real estate option that these particular grants are looking to accelerate that. Speaker 1:And while strictly not 100% focused on mass timber, the Climate Change Advisory Council has urged the government to adopt sustainable construction methods to reduce emissions immediately. Published in its annual review Islands, industry and Waste Sectors, the CCAC emphasised the need for increased timber use and modern methods of construction. It also called for adoptions for whole carbon assessments and targets and planning for public buildings to meet these sectoral targets. With the review noting a 6% drop in industrial building emissions by the EU emissions trading scheme from 2023 onwards will support reductions in the overall global creation of carbon. Speaker 1:And Wood Solutions, who educates and advocates for the design and construction of sustainable timber homes, has released its resilient, focused approach to address climate challenges and ensure safety and well-being for occupants through its resilient timber homes technical design guide. The guide is available for download if you log into the Wood Solutions site, register your details and then you'll be able to access it. It's a comprehensive guide. It supports the understanding of how repairing and replacing homes and their contents after natural catastrophes have significantly increased over the last 15 years. Increased over the last 15 years and, working in conjunction with the Insurance Council of Australia, they have been able to come up with some ways to improve climate resilience in new and existing homes to reduce costs, allow sustainable market growth and facilitate improvements in housing supply crises that we're currently going through in Australia. If you'd like to see more, you can actually head to our linkedin feed and researchers from prudhoe forestry and natural resources in the united states are teaming up with partners across the state to stimulate, expand and support the utilization of hardwood lumber by creating the indiana wood. Goals for the project are to increase forest health and resilience, competitiveness of wood products in the industry for economic development in rural areas in the state. The team will aim to create and implement a strategic plan to increase awareness of the benefits from utilizing resources in their state After gathering input from industry advisory boards and several roundtable discussions across the state. The plan will include specific action items on forest ownership, supply chain, manufacturing, marketing policy and regulation and public perception. The IWUT team will design, develop and implement statewide promotional and educational programs for the general public to increase awareness and the utilization of wood products.
Speaker 1:And a massive new student housing project is going ahead at the University of British Columbia UBC Vancouver campus, following the provincial government's confirmation of a significant infusion of funding to cover a majority of the costs. The existing low-rise structures on the large lot currently occupied by St John's College on the west end of the campus will be redeveloped in a total of 1,580 student bed housing units. The development site will be framed by Northwest Marine Drive to the west and University Boulevard to the north, lower Mall and existing Ponderosa Commons residents to the east and the existing Marine Drive residents to the south. This entails 1,333 net new beds plus 175 new one-for-one replacement beds to the existing college site. The beds will be primarily dedicated to graduate students.
