Don't forget our special guest episodes that have been landing infrequently this year due to a lot of heavy workload, and we want to bring you some really important news from around the world each week, which is what this podcast does. So let's get into it and see what's making news in mass timber construction land. And first up, we have some news from the International Association of Mass Timber Construction and, specifically, the school within it. We are currently in development for our online modules, which will constitute a micro course on mass timber that will be free to access module one and we hope to end up beta testing within the next four to six weeks. So look out for news on the module one course coming up and some beta testing, and we look forward to bringing you more news on this initiative as it comes to hand. The new york city mass timber, a nine-month technical assistance accelerator for seven timber projects in preliminary planning and design, was wrapped up last week. It's a game changer in making mass timber seem realistic on the way forward to a more smooth and sustainable construction future in New York City. The studio was launched in New York City Economic Development Commission. We reported this previously on the podcast many months ago, and if you'd like to go and see some of the amazing artifacts and spaces that were available to go and see during this particular exhibition, you can head to our LinkedIn feed.

We don't often see a lot of residential projects, but in Japan there is a house that is off the ground and nestled into the side of the urban landscape. In western Japan, nanometer architecture completed the house off the ground a stilted residence spanning two floors with a loft in a western part of Japan, originally farmland, which was rich with crops and trees. This particular location has become a residential haven and the surrounding development has many levels of land which you construct homes on, but flat land was not one of them. If you'd like to go and see this amazing, stilted house which has this jutting counter lever coming out and it looks to be exposed mass timber or timber cladding on the outside, head to our linkedin feed and some more pictures are coming through from the university of california berkeley campus, where the undergraduate buildings were recently completed construction. The building embraces sustainable design approach using a complex pathways of green spaces on the campus. The five-story building features limestone plaster facade and the campus core, an L-shaped building with a grade-level auditorium frame and terrace. It is the first mass timber project at UC Berkeley and the undergraduate academic building embraces environmental benefits. Berkeley and the undergraduate academic building embraces environmental benefits. Designed by LMN architects, the building is estimated to open to staff and students in 2026.

And Foster and Partners has been added again with a vaulted timber hall in Spain which features this earthy material palette and an overhanging roof. It is a 160-year-old estate for a visitor center and it was designed to improve the connection between the vineyard and the cellars and this amazing visitor structure. If you want to go and see images, head to our LinkedIn feed. Not your typical building, but the Watchtower which serves as a viewing platform for bat habitat. Next Architects has completed this 26 meter tall watchtower, designed for visitors to have a panoramic view. The lookout tower integrates both recreational and ecological functions in a modest yet iconic structure that enhances the region. The design features a spiral staircase leading to a viewing platform. And you guessed it it's made out of mass timber construction. Part of the structure is actually carved away to show the superstructure which sits beneath, and it is an impressive building towering a little bit above the tree line within this particular region, and you can go and see all the images on our LinkedIn feed and in news coming out of the US.

Good friends to the show, swinerton slash Timber Lab have broken ground on a mixed-use mass timber office building located in Austin, texas. The mixed-use timber building known as Wood Bench, located in an East Austin neighborhood, will serve as a showcase for potential Swinerton clients interested in mass timber. According to the release Swinderton estimates, the timber used on the project will be around 500 cubic tons of carbon dioxide stored within the timber itself, which is the equivalent of removing 301 cars from the roadway every year. Congratulations to the team at Swinderton. You're always on the innovation hunt and you've been able to make another milestone and a recognition for mass timber in the construction market.
