Let's have a look at what's making news around the world this week in Mass Timber Construction Land.
Speaker 1:First, up to Copenhagen, and Frame House is a single family home situated in an old part of Copenhagen's southern harbour. It originally inhabited by dock workers. The area is characterised by an ensemble of small scale buildings, workshops and living units that are self-built houses and architectural experiments. The infill house is tucked in between two existing buildings, with three wooden frames spanning between the neighboring houses. With a critical approach towards sustainability trends, the house and the offices' first project is to explore the idea of using structural frame systems independent of the climate screen, doing so with a reinterpretation of a traditional Danish half-timbered house. You can have a look at these amazing glulam structures that are being put up on our LinkedIn feed.
Speaker 1:Heading to South Africa now, and South Africans have been slow to embrace timber for housing and commercial construction, but it looks like this is set to change. A combination of intensifying climate change and accelerating urbanization is making wood more attractive as a building material. Wood is good, says the interim vice chancellor and principal of the University of Pretoria During a recent innovation Africa at Up Growth, vision and Timber Design Competition Awards hosted by the UP's York Timbers, chair and Wood Structural Engineering, york Timbers and the National Department of Trade and Industry and Competition. This competition for architecture, students across South Africa challenged them to find ways to build faster and better while reducing carbon emissions. Setting the scene was that the built environment is responsible for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions globally and about a third of those which are discharged during construction. During construction, better designs and biomaterials are needed to help meet the demand of new buildings, and so bioeconomy referring to economy that has activities that use and converts biological resources into construction materials, was brought to the fore in all of the winning entries in the 2024 design competition. If you'd like to read more about the University of Pretoria's design competition, please head to you guessed it our LinkedIn feed. And to Germany now, and the Wagen Tower and Hybrid Flax Pavilion have won the iconic German Design Council honours as part of the iconic awards in 2024 Innovative Architecture. The two projects from the Cluster of Excellence Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture were both honoured this year. The international competition is backed by the German Design Council, which is regarded as an authority on design in Germany. If you'd like to have a look at the amazing entries from 540 submissions from 36 countries, you can head to our LinkedIn feed.
Speaker 1:And the Dubai municipality has now reminded consultants and contractors in the Emirati states to understand that mandatory approval of building systems for all contractors and consultants must ensure the building systems they implement in their projects are approved by the Dubai municipality. The measure is aimed at maintaining safety, structural integrity and compliance with Dubai's building regulations. The list of approved building systems includes off-site modular construction, including prefab steel, modular prefab concrete, international shipping container structure, as well as additive manufacturing, 3d concrete printing, insulated concrete forms, 3d construction panels and, of course, mass timber, cross-laminated timber, timber portal frame and composite systems using light gauge structural steel. If you'd like to know more about this, you can head to the Dubai Municipalities website to be able to see more about the details. Municipalities website to be able to see more about the details, and to Canada, ontario now, and the Canadian Wood Council and Woodshore, a division of Access Insurance Managers, inc. Recently launched a new partnership between Woodworks and Woodshore programs, which aims to help support the increased adoption of wood in construction in Canada.
Speaker 1:The influences of design, innovation, advanced material, new building codes and the evolving priorities of society are driving change in the construction sector and the expanded use of advanced wood construction.
