Microsoft is attempting to construct data centers made from wood as part of its company's wider offerings to slash its carbon footprint. The cloud giant is constructing two data centers in Virginia using cross-laminated timber and is trying to reduce construction. And Microsoft are trying to reduce the amount of carbon emissions from their construction of their data centers by building with a hybrid material composite system and that is using CLT and steel structure. But Microsoft engineers claim that they've made a hybrid data center which uses a combination of wood and steel and concrete to help decarbonize the centers, clt being used to supplement concrete and steel throughout the two-story structure, and Microsoft claims it's the hybrid building will reduce carbon footprint in its two facilities by 35% compared to conventional steel construction and 65% compared to typical precast concrete. Congratulations to Microsoft for taking a lead in this area. If you'd like to read more about what Microsoft are doing, including watching a video on their data center, you can head to our LinkedIn feed.

Solar panels cover the roof and, of course, they're using mass timber construction for the main body, including GLT and CLT, and the exterior is going to be used traditional Japanese techniques of charred wood to help increase durability and preserve the wood without using chemicals or surface treatments.
